When it comes to creating new beer recipes, do you normally use some brewing software? Or an online recipe calculator? My advice would then be: create your own brewing calculator! It may sound like a ridiculous waste of time, like why would I spend hours creating something that already exists? I believe that creating your own tool can bring some important positive outcomes: - It will force you to look into, and therefore understand all the calculations involved in your brew. - It will make you know your equipment better in terms of efficiency, which may eventually lead to some process adjustments you wouldn’t have otherwise thought necessary. - It will make you know your ingredients better by looking into your malt CoA’s, calculating your yeast attenuation capacity, hop utilisation at different additions, etc etc. - It will be suited to your equipment with only the information you need. - It is a great way to practice Excel and its formulas, which is a tool you can use in various other areas of your brewery (accounting, inventory management and loss control, process controls, etc.) Of course, you may already be doing all this without having to create a recipe calculator, but it has been a very good excercise for me so I felt like it could be for somebody else too!
