Cans are the new bottles?

A trend based on aesthetics or environmental consciouness? Here's a few things to keep in mind when choosing your beer packaging:

- An awful lot of energy is saved recycling aluminium cans when compared to glass bottles.

- Cans are much lighter than bottles, which reduces their carbon footprint when it comes to transportation.

However, the production of aluminium is a lot more energy demanding and sometimes even controversial (you can google "bauxite mining controversies" for some exemples)

This means that even if a good proportion of the aluminium in a can comes from recycling, the increase in demande may not be that enviroment friendly.

The glass for bottles being made with silica makes them easier to produce.

So as a beer drinker, the best option remains to come to your local brewery to enjoy a fresh pint straight from the tap and take some home using your reusable growlers!

When not possible, it comes down to the brewer to favour reused bottles and recycled aluminium cans.
